Wind turbine service technicians (windtechs) install, inspect, maintain, and repair the turbines that generate wind power. That means climbing hundreds of feet up the tower, working in the nacelle on gearboxes, generators, hydraulics, and electrical and control systems, and troubleshooting faults — often in remote locations and rough weather.
Most work is onshore across wind-heavy regions (the Plains, Texas, the Midwest). Offshore wind is an emerging, higher-paying frontier with longer rotations. It's a physically demanding, safety-critical job for people who don't mind heights or the outdoors.
The two main routes are a certificate program or a two-year associate's (AAS) in wind energy technology, offered by community colleges and private institutes (for example, Pinnacle Career Institute and a number of technical colleges in wind states). Programs cover electrical and mechanical systems, hydraulics, climbing and safety, and troubleshooting.
The core safety credential is GWO Basic Safety Training (Global Wind Organisation), which includes working-at-height, first aid, manual handling, and fire awareness. Employers also value electrical/mechanical aptitude and clean climbing/rescue certification.
