Most guides about the GI Bill are written for somebody headed to a four-year school. The math is different if you're going into a trade, and the difference is big enough to change which path makes sense for you.
This covers what the benefit actually pays in two situations: enrolled at a trade school, and working inside a registered apprenticeship or on-the-job training program. They are not the same thing. One of them pays you while you work.
In an apprenticeship, your housing allowance drops every six months. It starts at 100% and steps down to 80%, then 60%, then 40%, then 20% for the rest of your training. Your wages are supposed to rise to cover it. They don't always rise at the same pace, and month seven is where people get caught out.
Plan around the step-down from day one instead of getting blindsided by it. Here's the full schedule under the Post-9/11 GI Bill:

The rate itself is based on the Department of Defense Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents, calculated on your employer's location — not where you live. If you first used Post-9/11 benefits on or after January 1, 2018, that figure is based on DoD's reduced BAH rate.
This is the situation that catches people off guard in a good way. You are being paid a wage by your employer and receiving a housing allowance from VA at the same time. The GI Bill isn't paying tuition here, because in a registered apprenticeship the training is generally provided at little or no cost to you.
Alongside the housing allowance, apprentices and OJT trainees can receive up to $83 per month for books and supplies, prorated by your eligibility percentage and paid at the start of each school year.
If you're on the Montgomery GI Bill instead of Post-9/11, apprenticeship and OJT pay a flat monthly rate rather than a housing allowance, on a similar step-down.

Those are the rates for October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. Selected Reserve requires at least 120 hours of work a month to draw the full amount.
Rates change every year — check VA.gov rather than trusting a number you read anywhere, including here. And VA has announced the Montgomery GI Bill will begin phasing out in 2030.
Your entitlement is finite. The instinct is to spend it on tuition, because tuition is the biggest number in front of you. But if the trade you want runs a registered apprenticeship where the training is already free, you'd be spending a tuition benefit on something that has no tuition.
Used inside an apprenticeship instead, the same benefit becomes a monthly housing supplement on top of a paycheck — money coming in while you're earning, not while you're paying.
That doesn't make trade school the wrong answer. Some trades have no apprenticeship route where you live. Some have waiting lists measured in years. Some certifications only come through a school. The point is that these are two genuinely different uses of the same benefit, and the apprenticeship option is the one nobody tells you about.
